Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom has urged corps members deployed to the state to prioritise their safety during the service year, particularly by avoiding night travel.
He gave the caution on Tuesday at the closing of the 2025 Batch C orientation course in Ikot Itie Udung, Nsit Atai Local Government Area.
The governor was represented by Emmanuel Akpabio, director of youth development, Ministry of Youth Development.
Mr Eno advised the corps members to use only recognised public transport companies and avoid being on the road after dark.
“Please avoid travelling at night, no matter how urgent it may be. Seek temporary shelter at a safe location if your journey extends beyond 6:00 p.m,” he said.
He noted that corps lodges, police stations and military barracks are safe options when travel becomes unavoidable.
“Night travelling is dangerous. Please, be wise; prioritise your safety,” he warned.
The governor further urged them to board vehicles from designated motor parks with proper manifests and maintain regular communication.
“Always share your locations with friends and families,” he said. “Remember the security numbers and tips that you were given; please use them in the event of emergencies.”
Mr Eno also encouraged corps members posted to Akwa Ibom to respect the culture and traditions of their host communities and contribute meaningfully to civic education efforts.
“You are expected to play a significant role in enlightening our people on their civic responsibilities and in strengthening our collective pursuit of a just, progressive and prosperous society,” he said.
Earlier, NYSC coordinator in the state, Sam Pepple, said the orientation course adequately prepared the corps members for the tasks ahead.
He added that they showed “discipline and resilience” and demonstrated the leadership capacity required for nation-building.
