Another PDP governor set to dump party for APC
Barring any last minute change of plans, Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State is set to leave the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the All Progressives Congress (APC).
According to Premium Times, this comes after weeks of consultations with political allies in Enugu and across Nigeria.
The planned defection, expected to be made official soon, will further reduce the PDP’s hold on state leadership, leaving it with only nine governors, while the APC will rise to 24.
Three other states remain under Labour Party, All Progressives Grand Alliance, and the New Nigeria Peoples Party.
Mbah, who became governor in 2023, has been in talks with key figures, including former governors of Enugu, Chimaroke Nnamani and Sullivan Chime, as well as former Senate President Ken Nnamani, who are now aligned with the APC.
His decision is linked to ongoing disputes within the PDP, especially over the party’s leadership structure and what he views as unfair treatment of the Southeast.
In June, he had threatened to lead the region out of the PDP after the national leadership ignored the Southeast’s choice for national secretary and reinstated Samuel Anyanwu, an ally of Nyesom Wike.
That disagreement deepened his dissatisfaction with the party.
Although his spokesperson has not confirmed a final decision, close associates say the move to APC is certain and only awaiting an official date.
Mbah, a lawyer and businessman, previously served Enugu as Chief of Staff in 2003 and later as Commissioner for Finance and Economic Development before becoming governor.
If he finalises the switch, the PDP will lose yet another state after recent defections by the governors of Akwa Ibom and Delta.
This continues a troubling trend for the party, which has governed Enugu since 1999 but is now facing internal division and weakening control nationwide.
