Nigeria’s minister of defence, Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has resigned from his position, citing health reasons.
The Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, confirmed in a statement on Monday.
He stated that Abubakar sent a resignation letter to President Bola Tinubu dated December 1.
He further revealed that the President has accepted the resignation and thanked Abubakar for his service to the nation.
Abubakar, 63, served as governor of Jigawa State for two terms from 2015 to 2023 before his appointment as Defence Minister on August 21, 2023.
President Tinubu is expected to inform the Senate of a successor later this week.
His resignation comes amid President Tinubu’s recent declaration of a national security emergency, with further details on its scope expected soon.
The rise in terror attacks recently including the kidnap of students from Niger state, kebbi school girls, Kwara church attack and more have led to calls for the security architecture to be improved.
Badaru’s resignation comes few months after Uche Nnaji resigned as minister of innovation, science, and technology following the allegations of certificate forgery against him.
