APC bars PDP governor from joining party
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has blocked a plan by Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang to leave the Peoples Democratic Party and join the ruling party.
According to The Whistler, the move was stopped during an APC stakeholders’ meeting in Jos, where top party leaders, including the APC National Chairman Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, former Governor Simon Lalong, former Deputy Speaker Idris Wase, former Governor Joshua Dariye, Dame Pauline Tallen, Dr Cyril Tsenyil, serving and former lawmakers, and many party members gathered to take a collective stand on the matter.
During the meeting, Yilwatda, who contested the 2023 governorship race against Mutfwang, asked former Deputy National Secretary of the APC, Festus Fuanter, to move a motion on the governor’s planned defection.
When the question was put to members on whether the party should accept Mutfwang, the hall responded with a clear voice vote rejecting the proposal.
The resolution stated that the party would proceed towards the 2027 elections without taking in new entrants from other political platforms.
Party members maintained that the APC already has strong structures across all zones in the state and does not need support from outside groups to win future elections.
This decision brought Mutfwang’s defection bid to an immediate end as the stakeholders agreed to keep the party closed to politicians seeking to cross over amid the ongoing challenges within their parties.
