Troops of the 6 Brigade Nigerian Army have killed four armed militia members and arrested a police officer allegedly working with bandits in Karim Lamido Local Government Area of Taraba State.
Brigade spokesperson Lieutenant Umar Muhammad announced the development in a statement issued in Jalingo on Sunday.
He said troops responded to distress calls over renewed communal violence and met armed men who opened fire but were overpowered.
“Troops of 6 Brigade, Nigerian Army, have neutralised four armed militia members and recovered weapons during a rapid and coordinated response to renewed communal violence in Usmanu Village, Karim Lamido Local Government Area of Taraba State,” the statement said.
The attack was linked to renewed clashes over a long-standing land dispute between the Shomo and Wurkun communities. According to the Army, the confrontation had already led to the burning of houses before troops were deployed to halt the escalation.
“Upon reaching the area, the troops came under fire from armed assailants emerging from the Fadama axis. A brief but fierce exchange ensued, during which the soldiers neutralised four of the attackers,” the spokesperson added.
Recovered items include three dane guns, one fabricated AK-47 rifle, 25 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition and two motorcycles.
The Army also confirmed the arrest of a serving police officer allegedly operating with the armed group. “He is currently undergoing investigation and profiling to determine his level of involvement,” the statement said.
Commander of 6 Brigade/Sector 3 Operation Whirl Stroke, Brigadier General Kingsley Chidiebere Uwa, praised the troops for their “prompt response, bravery, and adherence to professional rules of engagement.”
He assured residents of the Brigade’s commitment to restoring peace.
“Brigadier General Uwa assured the people of Karim Lamido and Taraba State at large of the Brigade’s unwavering commitment to restoring lasting peace and stability,” the statement added.
