Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has formally resigned from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
He said he is withdrawing his membership because the party is drifting away from its founding ideals.
In a resignation letter dated July 14, 2025, and addressed to the PDP chairman in his Jada 1 Ward, Adamawa State, Atiku stated that his decision to leave the party was due to irreconcilable differences with its current direction.
He described the move as painful, noting that the PDP no longer aligns with the values it once upheld.
Atiku, who served as Vice President from 1999 to 2007, recalled his long-standing involvement in the PDP as a founding member and its presidential candidate on two occasions.
He expressed gratitude for the roles he played within the party and the opportunities it offered him.
Though he did not disclose his next political steps, the former Vice President wished the PDP and its leadership well in the future.
The letter was officially received and acknowledged on July 14 by Hammadama Abubakar on behalf of the party.
