Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has reacted to the defection of his son, Abubakar Atiku Abubakar (Abba), to the All Progressives Congress (APC), describing the move as a personal decision.
In a statement shared on social media on Thursday, Atiku said his son’s choice was made independently and should not be misconstrued as reflecting his own political position.
“The decision of my son, Abba Abubakar, to join the APC is entirely personal,” Atiku said.
Recall Dockaysworld reported that Abba Abubakar, Atiku’s son joined the APC and threw his weight behind the re-election of President Bola Tinubu, come 2027.
Atiku while responding, stated that political differences within families are not unusual in a democracy.
“In a democracy, such choices are neither unusual nor alarming, even when family and politics intersect,” he stated.
Atiku stated that he does not impose political views on his children or others.
“As a democrat, I do not coerce my own children in matters of conscience, and I certainly will not coerce Nigerians,” he said.
The former PDP presidential candidate, however, criticised the APC-led government, blaming it for Nigeria’s current economic and social challenges.
“What truly concerns me is the poor governance of the APC and the severe economic and social hardships it has imposed on our people,” Atiku said.
“I remain resolute in working with like-minded patriots to restore good governance and offer Nigerians a credible alternative that brings relief, hope, and progress,” he added.
