Atiku Takes Fresh Action on ADC Membership as APC Governors Plan Defection

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has put his formal entry into the African Democratic Congress (ADC) on hold, pending the expected defection of several governors from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to the opposition party, Dockaysworld reports.

Atiku, who recently quit the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) after protracted internal disputes, had been scheduled to receive his ADC membership card in his hometown of Jada, Adamawa State, on August 6. However, the event has now been postponed indefinitely.

ADC Adamawa State chairman, Shehu Yohana, confirmed the development, stating that Atiku informed him the ceremony could now take place in mid-August or even September.

“He said he was waiting for some APC governors who are planning to join ADC before his event in Jada,” Yohana said.

Party insiders suggest the delay may also be connected to an internal struggle for influence within the ADC between Atiku’s loyalists and supporters of former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi. According to one senior party figure, Obi’s movement has consolidated its hold on the party’s structures in the South, potentially complicating Atiku’s presidential ambitions.

There are also reports that the ADC is in discreet talks with former President Goodluck Jonathan over a possible 2027 presidential bid. A party chieftain claimed Jonathan had met coalition leaders three times and responded positively, while ruling out a return to the PDP due to its lingering crisis.

When asked about a potential automatic ticket for Jonathan, the source replied, “When we get to the bridge, we will know how to cross it.”

Meanwhile, ADC national publicity secretary Bolaji Abdullahi declined to confirm any specifics, maintaining that the party remains open to all Nigerians willing to work toward rescuing the country from hardship.
