At least 22 soldiers of the Nigerian Army have been killed after an overnight attack carried out by fighters of Boko Haram in the north-east region of Nigeria.
The incident happened in Monguno, an area that has faced repeated assaults linked to the long-running insurgency.
Reports from security sources said the attackers stormed a military position and engaged troops in a fierce exchange of fire.
During the confrontation, a senior officer identified as Colonel I.A. Muhammad and 21 other soldiers lost their lives.
The colonel and his team were serving under the 242 Battalion of the Nigerian Army in the region.
The area of operation falls within Borno State, which has remained one of the hardest hit zones since the insurgency began many years ago.
The conflict has led to repeated attacks on both military formations and civilian communities.
The Nigerian Army, under Nigerian Army, has not yet issued a full public statement on the latest incident.
