A high-level coalition meeting between former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party’s Peter Obi, former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, and other political leaders was disrupted on Sunday following a protest by delegates from Jigawa State.
The meeting took place at the Abuja Continental Hotel and was organised by the National Political Consultative Group (North) as part of ongoing talks ahead of the 2027 elections.
The disruption began when Babachir Lawal, a former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, introduced a delegate to speak on behalf of Jigawa State.
The decision was immediately challenged by some Jigawa representatives who felt the choice did not reflect their interest.
In protest, they walked up to the stage and prevented the person from addressing the gathering.
Their actions brought the meeting to a standstill.
Security officers, including personnel from the police, Department of State Services, and private guards, quickly moved in to shield key figures such as Atiku, Obi, and Amaechi from the commotion.
The situation grew tense as the Jigawa delegates insisted on having their own chosen voices heard.
Efforts to restore calm took several minutes, during which appeals were made to the angry delegates.
Eventually, Mustapha Lamido, son of former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido, and another delegate were accepted as representatives of the state, allowing the meeting to continue.
