Court suspends state House of Assembly speaker, lawmakers

A Zamfara State High Court has barred Hon. Bashar Aliyu from identifying as the Speaker of the State House of Assembly.

The decision was given by Justice Muhammad Gusau in response to a legal motion filed by the Assembly itself on June 23, 2025.

The judge also barred eight others from presenting themselves as lawmakers or performing any legislative roles while the court reviews the main case.

Justice Gusau ruled that Aliyu and anyone acting on his behalf must not perform duties linked to the speaker’s office until the court gives a final decision on the matter.

In the same ruling, the judge ordered the second to ninth respondents to stop holding unauthorized sittings or taking steps to install a new speaker until the issue is fully resolved in court.

This court order comes amid rising tension within the Zamfara State House of Assembly over its leadership structure.
