The Dangote Petroleum Refinery has stopped selling petrol in naira, creating fresh tension among fuel marketers and raising fears of more pressure on pump prices.
The decision was made known in a message sent to customers on Friday evening, stating that the suspension would begin on Sunday, September 28, 2025.
According to the refinery, the crude-for-naira allocation that allowed sales in the local currency has been exhausted, making it impossible to continue transactions in naira.
The company asked customers who already paid for naira-based transactions but are yet to receive their supply to request refunds.
It explained that further information on when sales in naira might resume would be communicated later.
This development comes while the refinery is facing a heated dispute with labour unions after more than 800 Nigerian workers were reportedly laid off.
It is not the first time the refinery has halted local currency sales. In March 2025, it briefly stopped selling refined products in naira due to insufficient allocations under the crude-for-naira programme.
That move had already fueled debates about the dollarisation of fuel sales in Nigeria and led to a sharp rise in pump prices, with petrol selling close to N1,000 per litre.
