The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) says troops of Operation Hadin Kai repelled a coordinated attack by Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) fighters on a military base in Benisheikh, Borno State.
In a statement on Thursday, the DHQ said the assault occurred around 12:30 am when insurgents attempted to breach the Headquarters of the 29 Task Force Brigade but were met with “superior firepower” and forced to retreat.
The military described the attack as a sign of desperation by terrorist groups following recent losses in the North-East.
The DHQ confirmed that some soldiers were killed during the encounter, adding that the Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, paid tribute to the fallen personnel and extended condolences to their families.
It, however, did not comment on reports alleging that Brig.-Gen. O. O. Braimah was killed in the attack.
The DHQ said further details would be released after families of the deceased are formally notified and urged the public to disregard unverified reports and misinformation.
It added that clearance operations are ongoing to track fleeing insurgents and prevent regrouping, while reaffirming its commitment to sustaining anti-terror operations and calling for public support through credible information.
