The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested three individuals for alleged vote buying during Saturday’s governorship election in Anambra State.
A statement by the commission confirmed that its operatives apprehended the suspects in separate locations across the state while monitoring the electoral process.
Those arrested include Emeka Ilokasia, picked up at Ward 2 in Njikoka Local Government Area; Nwachukwu Loretta, arrested at Ward 2 (008), Awkuzu in Oyi Local Government Area; and Emuka Chuwudi, arrested at Umunachi Village in Dunukofia Local Government Area.
The EFCC said the suspects were caught in possession of evidence suggesting attempts to induce voters during the election. They are currently in custody and will be charged to court upon conclusion of investigations.
Meanwhile, two of the main contenders in the election, the Labour Party candidate, George Moghalu, and the incumbent governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), had earlier alleged widespread vote buying in several parts of the state, calling on security agencies to intervene.
Recall Dockaysworld reported the presidency’s reaction to Peter Obi’s polling unit loss during the election, propping up the APC candidate’s victory simultaneously.
According to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), 97 percent of polling unit results have been uploaded and are open to the public for viewing on the INEC Result Viewing Portal (IReV).
The election is the first to be conducted under the leadership of the new INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan.
