Former Borno State Governor, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, has revealed that Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, is set to return to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to pursue his presidential ambition in the 2027 elections, Dockaysworld reports.
Sheriff made the disclosure during an interview on Channels Television on Monday night, stating that credible information indicates Obi’s imminent return to the PDP.
“As far as this politics is concerned, they (ADC) don’t exist. The information available to me is that any moment from now, Peter Obi will go back to PDP and run as a presidential candidate under PDP,” Sheriff said.
Peter Obi, who served two terms as governor of Anambra State, was a member of the PDP before defecting to the Labour Party in May 2022, shortly before the party’s presidential primaries. During his time in the PDP, he was the running mate to Atiku Abubakar in the 2019 presidential election under the same platform.
Sheriff’s revelation follows a recent remark by a PDP founding member and elder statesman, Professor Jerry Gana, who confirmed that the party has begun engaging Peter Obi and other prominent southern politicians in strategic consultations.
Gana, a former Minister of Information, said the PDP was undergoing internal restructuring in preparation for 2027.
Speculation over Obi’s possible return has intensified following reports that the PDP may zone its 2027 presidential ticket to the South. Recall that the Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the party, Ibrahim Abdullahi, described Obi as a “valuable asset.”
He said, “Peter Obi is our product. We want to get him back, indeed, because he is a very, very great capital for any political party.”
Obi finished third in the 2023 presidential election behind President Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Atiku Abubakar of the PDP.
