FG Approves New Degree Programmes For Nigerian Universities
The National Universities Commission (NUC) has announced the approval of thirteen new degree programmes for Nigerian universities as part of its 2025 Core Curriculum and Minimum Academic Standards (CCMAS) update.
In a circular dated October 22, 2025, and addressed to all vice-chancellors across the country, the NUC’s Executive Secretary, Professor Abdullahi Yusufu Ribadu, said the new additions were developed by experts drawn from the Nigerian University System in March 2025.
According to him, the approval reflects the Commission’s ongoing efforts to strengthen quality assurance, improve academic relevance, and align university education in Nigeria with emerging global trends.
The newly approved programmes include:
B.Sc. Artificial Intelligence
B.Ed. Classical Christian Education
B.Ed. Human Kinetics (Sport Management)
B.Ed. Geomatics Engineering
B.ITS Community Health Sciences
B.Sc. Intelligence and Security Studies
B.Sc. Islamic Economics and Finance
B.Sc. Parasitology and Entomology
B.Sc. Telecommunication Science
B.Sc. Water, Sanitation and Hygiene
B.Sc. Cooperative Economics and Management
B.Sc. Nuclear Science
B.Eng. Nuclear Engineering
The Commission directed all universities to circulate the approved CCMAS documents to their faculties, departments, and academic planning units.
It also instructed institutions to develop the remaining 30 percent of their institution-based curriculum in line with CCMAS provisions.
Universities interested in offering the new programmes are to begin implementation from the 2025/2026 academic session after undergoing a Resource Assessment Visit by the NUC.
