FG breaks silence on Wike’s clash with naval officer
The Federal Government through the Ministry of Defence has reacted to the recent clash between the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, and soldiers over a disputed parcel of land in Abuja.
The land is reportedly owned by former Chief of Naval Staff Vice Admiral Awwal Gambo (rtd).
The confrontation happened on Tuesday when FCT officials tried to gain access to the estate, but soldiers on guard duty blocked them.
Lieutenant Yerima, the naval officer involved, insisted he was acting under lawful orders, leading to a tense verbal exchange with Wike.
Neither side backed down during the standoff, which drew attention from residents and officials nearby.
In response, Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru supported Lieutenant Yerima, describing him as a disciplined officer performing his duties.
He assured that officers acting lawfully would be protected and that the military would not allow any harm to come to those following orders.
“We will always protect our officer, he has done well. We won’t allow anything happen to him,” the minister stated.
“So we are looking into this issue, and we assure that any officer on lawful duty will be protected highly.
“So we will not allow anything to happen to him so far he is doing his job, and he is doing his job greatly well,” he said.
