FG lists 28 states to experience flooding for 15 days
The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) has raised fresh concerns about the likelihood of serious flooding in 28 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
According to the agency, 739 communities across 162 local government areas could experience heavy flooding from July 22 to August 5, 2025.
This warning is based on projections from the agency’s 2025 Annual Flood Outlook released earlier in April.
The agency stated that the weekly alerts are part of efforts to help authorities and residents prepare and reduce damage during the rainy season.
States listed in the alert include Adamawa, Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Bauchi, Bayelsa, Benue, Borno, Cross River, Delta, Ebonyi, Edo, the FCT, Gombe, Imo, Jigawa, Kebbi, Kogi, Kwara, Lagos, Nasarawa, Niger, Ondo, Plateau, Rivers, Sokoto, Taraba, and Yobe.
NIHSA explained that the level of flooding may vary across different areas.
Residents are advised to prepare ahead of time, especially in cities like Lagos and Abuja, which are also expected to be affected.
The agency also mentioned that over 100 major roads could be blocked by floodwater, including key routes such as Okene-Lokoja-Abuja Road, Birnin Kebbi-Bunza Road, and Ibi-Wukari Road.
Homes, markets, and public facilities in lowland areas could face damage.
Farmlands are also at risk, as crops in several regions might be destroyed, which could lead to a drop in food supply nationwide.
NIHSA advised residents of flood-prone areas to begin evacuation if needed and stay informed through the agency’s official channels.
Authorities and emergency teams across the country have been urged to get ready for quick response and take preventive actions to reduce losses.
