FG Lists New Requirements For University Admissions
The Federal Government has released a revised set of requirements for gaining admission into tertiary institutions across Nigeria.
The new policy, announced on Tuesday by the Ministry of Education, allows candidates applying for non-science courses to gain admission without a credit pass in mathematics.
The review applies to universities, polytechnics, colleges of education, and innovation enterprise academies nationwide.
The ministry explained that the new rule is designed to expand access to higher education and reduce the number of qualified candidates who miss out each year due to rigid entry criteria.
Under the new guideline, university applicants must obtain at least five credit passes in relevant subjects, including English, in not more than two sittings.
Mathematics remains mandatory only for science, technology, and social science courses.
For polytechnics, a minimum of four credit passes in relevant subjects, including English, is required for non-science courses, while mathematics is compulsory for science-related programmes.
Candidates seeking admission into colleges of education at the NCE level must also have at least four credit passes, with English mandatory for arts and social science courses and mathematics required for science, vocational, and technical studies.
At the HND and B.Ed levels, five credits are required, including English and mathematics, depending on the course of study.
The policy also directs innovation enterprise academies to adopt the same minimum entry standard as polytechnics for National Diploma programmes, while the National Innovation Diploma (NID) has been scrapped.
