The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) has reassured Nigerians that the federal government is fully committed to ensuring the regular supply and smooth distribution of fuel across the country.
Speaking at a stakeholders’ meeting in Warri, Delta State, NMDPRA’s state coordinator, Victor Ohwodiasa, said there is no need for worry, as the government is working to maintain a steady flow of petroleum products and to prevent disruptions.
The meeting focused on improving the safety and accountability of fuel transportation within Delta State.
Some of the main topics discussed included the Safe-to-Load initiative, which aims to reduce road accidents involving fuel tankers, and the need for proper documentation of trucks.
They also talked about introducing colour codes and branding for tankers to help identify the type of fuel each one carries.
Ohwodiasa explained that delays in the oil and gas industry increase costs and that collaboration between stakeholders, including security agencies, is essential for more efficient operations.
He stated that the colour code system is already being enforced petrol tankers will be painted light blue, diesel tankers will have deep yellow and light blue, while kerosene tankers will be painted deep yellow, all with a height of 75 cm.
He also reminded participants about Section 48 of the Petroleum Industry Act, which requires any government body that wants to carry out an action affecting the petroleum sector to consult with NMDPRA first.
This, he said, ensures smooth fuel distribution nationwide.
As part of efforts to reduce accidents, Ohwodiasa said the government plans to reduce the maximum fuel truck capacity from 60,000 litres to 45,000 litres over time.
He encouraged the public to use emergency numbers 112 and 122 if there is an accident.
He added that this kind of meeting would continue regularly, as directed by the NMDPRA Chief Executive, Ahmed Farouk, to keep stakeholders informed and involved.
The event saw participation from key groups including the Nigerian Navy, Army, Joint Task Force, DSS, NSCDC, Federal Road Safety Corps, and fuel depot operators.
Leaders from major petroleum associations such as NARTO, IPMAN, and NUPENG also attended and praised the initiative.
