FG unveils 26 approved trades for technical schools
The Federal Government has introduced a new plan for technical education that will take effect from the 2025/2026 academic year.
The Ministry of Education announced that all Federal Science and Technical Colleges will now operate as Federal Technical Colleges under a revised curriculum.
The policy, approved by the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, and the Minister of State, Professor Suwaiba Sa’id Ahmad, requires each school to run not less than six and not more than ten trade courses.
Alongside the trade subjects, students will also study Citizenship and Heritage Studies, core science, and language subjects.
Under the new arrangement, students must take nine to ten subjects, including a core trade, five to six general subjects, two to three trade-related subjects, and one elective.
The ministry listed 26 trade areas in the curriculum.
They include bricklaying, carpentry, plumbing, computer hardware and GSM repair, refrigeration and air conditioning, mechanised agriculture, autobody works, catering, solar installation, fashion design, livestock farming, aquaculture, motorcycle and tricycle repairs, interior decoration, welding, auto-electrical wiring, automobile mechanics, beauty therapy, creative media, electronic maintenance, furniture making, networking and system security, social media content creation, tiling, automobile CNG conversion, and leather works.
The government explained that the update is aimed at modernising technical education, reducing overload in subject areas, and preparing students with practical skills that meet today’s job market needs across construction, energy, agriculture, automotive, creative media, and digital services.
