FG unveils new curriculum for primary, secondary schools
The Federal Government has approved a fresh set of subjects for Nigeria’s revised Basic and Senior Secondary Education Curriculum.
The Ministry of Education announced the development on Tuesday, explaining that the new curriculum was designed to reduce the burden of too many subjects, improve skill-based learning, and place Nigeria’s education system in line with global practice.
Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, and Minister of State for Education, Professor Suwaiba Ahmad, said the new framework was the outcome of consultations with the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC), WAEC, NECO, NBTE, NABTEB, and other stakeholders in the sector.
In the revised structure, pupils in Primary 1 to 3 will now take between nine and ten subjects, including English Studies, Mathematics, one Nigerian Language, Basic Science, Physical and Health Education, Nigerian History, Social and Citizenship Studies, Cultural and Creative Arts, and a choice of Christian Religious Studies or Islamic Studies, with Arabic as optional.
For Primary 4 to 6, the subject load increases to 11 to 13, with Basic Digital Literacy, Pre-vocational Studies, and French added as an optional subject.
Junior Secondary School students (JSS 1–3) will now take between 12 and 14 subjects, with new additions such as Digital Technologies, Business Studies, and a compulsory trade subject.
The trade options include Solar Photovoltaic Installation, Fashion Design, Livestock Farming, Beauty and Cosmetology, Computer Hardware and GSM Repairs, and Horticulture.
At the Senior Secondary level, five core subjects have been made compulsory: English Language, General Mathematics, one trade subject, Citizenship and Heritage Studies, and Digital Technologies.
Students are then allowed to choose from a wide range of electives across science, humanities, business, and technical fields, with options including Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Government, Literature, Accounting, Visual Arts, Catering Craft, and Horticulture.
