A former Speaker of the House of Representatives during Nigeria’s aborted Third Republic, Chief Agunwa Anaekwe has died at the age of 68.
He was from Adazi in Anaocha Local Government Area of Anambra State and held the speakership from December 1992 until the military took over in November 1993.
A lawyer by training and an alumnus of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Anaekwe remained active in the APC and participated in recent political meetings.
His death was confirmed by Dr. Chris Ngige, a former governor and minister, who described the loss as the fall of a political giant.
In Plateau State, Senator Diket Plang, who chairs the Senate Committee on Labour, Employment and Productivity, is mourning the death of his wife, Professor Janet Punyit Plang.
She died at the Jos University Teaching Hospital.
Professor Plang was a scholar at the University of Jos, where she lectured in Gender Studies and Gerontology.
Her promotion to professor took effect in October 2022.
The All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state confirmed her death in a statement, describing her as a key figure in her family and community.
