Former Inspector-General of Police Solomon Arase has reportedly died at Cedarcrest Hospital in Abuja, Dockaysworld reports.
According to Sahara Reporters, the former police chief passed away on Sunday, although his family and the Nigeria Police Force are yet to make an official announcement.
Arase, born on June 21, 1956, in Owan West Local Government Area of Edo State, joined the Nigeria Police Force in December 1981 after studying Political Science at Ahmadu Bello University.
He later earned a Law degree from the University of Benin and a Master’s degree from the University of Lagos.
Before becoming the country’s 18th Inspector-General of Police, he served in various top positions, including Commissioner of Police in Akwa Ibom State, Assistant Inspector-General in charge of intelligence, and head of the Criminal Intelligence and Investigation Bureau.
He also took part in a United Nations peacekeeping mission in Namibia and was a Fellow of the Nigerian Defence Academy.
Arase retired from the police on June 21, 2016, after reaching the mandatory retirement age.
In January 2023, former President Muhammadu Buhari appointed him Chairman of the Police Service Commission.
However, President Bola Tinubu removed him from the position in June 2024.
