Former presidential candidate reveals who will get ADC presidential ticket

Former presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Dumebi Kachikwu has alleged that the coalition is being prepared to pick Atiku Abubakar as its presidential candidate for the 2027 election.

Kachikwu said this is causing concern for former Labour Party (LP) candidate Peter Obi who joined the ADC-led coalition earlier in July alongside other opposition figures.

Obi had intended to use the platform to unseat the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the next election.

After the coalition was launched, Obi made it known that he would run again in 2027 but remained a member of the Labour Party.

However, Kachikwu now said Obi has realised that the coalition may not offer a fair ground, as it appears to favour Atiku.

Meanwhile, Business Day reports that tension is rising within coalition as some of its key players, including Peter Obi and Nasir El-Rufai, are reportedly considering leaving the coalition.

Their concern centres on former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s growing influence and plan to contest the 2027 presidential election under the party’s platform.

Sources revealed that many of the early supporters of the coalition are beginning to pull back, fearing that the platform is being hijacked for personal ambition rather than a fair contest.

El-Rufai, former governor of Kaduna State, is said to be strongly against Atiku’s bid.

He had supported a southern candidate in 2023 and still said the presidency should remain in the South until 2031.

Although he has not publicly declared support for any candidate, he has reportedly made it clear that he will not back a Northern aspirant.

So far, former Rivers State governor Rotimi Amaechi and Labour Party’s Peter Obi have both shown interest in the 2027 race from the southern region.

But Atiku’s decision to push ahead with his ambition under the ADC appears to be creating deep cracks within the coalition.

The internal struggle has prompted Labour Party’s vice-presidential candidate in 2023, Ahmed Datti, to return to his party.

His return is believed to be part of efforts to rebuild the Labour Party’s internal structure and secure a viable platform for Obi’s presidential run.
