Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has ordered the monitoring of daily attendance of newly recruited teachers across the state following reports of absenteeism.
The directive was issued to the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Goodluck Ubochi, and the Special Adviser on Basic and Secondary Education, Kenechukwu Nwosu, during the governor’s media chat on Thursday.
Otti also instructed the Abia State Universal Basic Education Board (ASUBEB) to closely monitor the teachers’ attendance.
The move followed a report by a television journalist alleging that some of the 5,394 teachers employed in 2025 attend work only twice a week.
The report claimed that the problem was most prevalent in schools located in Umuahia South Local Government Area.
Reacting to the allegation, the governor directed relevant agencies to investigate, stressing that the teachers were employed on a full-time basis and must report to work daily.
In line with the directive, the Special Adviser, Kenechukwu Nwosu, on Friday carried out unscheduled visits to some schools without notifying school authorities.
During the visits, Nwosu warned that any teacher found violating the terms of employment would face disciplinary action.
