Governor Makinde slams Umahi over lack of transparency on coastal highway project

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has criticised the Minister of Works, David Umahi, over his response during an interview on Arise News concerning the cost of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway.

While speaking at an event, Makinde questioned why the minister avoided stating how much the project costs per kilometre, saying Nigerians deserve transparency on public spending.

The backlash follows a heated exchange between Umahi and Arise TV anchor, Rufai Oseni, where the minister dismissed questions about the road’s cost per kilometre.

Makinde said providing a cost breakdown was not out of place, citing his own administration’s road projects in Oyo State, where he publicly disclosed costs per kilometre.

The Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway is one of Nigeria’s biggest infrastructure projects, expected to run across nine states, but it has continued to draw controversy over cost transparency and project execution.
