House of Reps pass bill to create new state
The House of Representatives on Thursday passed for second reading a bill seeking the creation of Ijebu State from the present Ogun State in Nigeria’s South-West region.
The proposed bill, sponsored by Hon. Olufemi Ogunbanwo, who represents Ijebu Ode, Ijebu North East, and Odogbolu Federal Constituency, alongside three other lawmakers, was approved during plenary for further consideration.
The bill aims to amend the 1999 Constitution as part of the ongoing nationwide push for the creation of new states to promote fairness, inclusion, and development across different parts of the country.
Following the debate, Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, who presided over the session, referred the proposal to the House Committee on Constitutional Review for additional legislative work.
The National Assembly is currently conducting a broad review of the 1999 Constitution, which is expected to improve Nigeria’s federal system and governance structure.
