The Igbos in Edo and Delta States has started a major grassroots campaign to support former Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, following an alleged threat by Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo.

In a statement on Friday, the group’s Coordinator-General, Chief Ekene Okpara, said the move was a response to the country’s rising economic problems and what he called the governor’s “provocative” remarks during Obi’s recent visit to Benin City.
Peter Obi remains one of the most popular politicians in Nigeria, especially among the Igbo people. In the 2023 presidential election, he surprised many by winning Lagos State, mostly because of strong support from Igbo voters and young Nigerians. Nationwide, Obi got over 6.1 million votes, winning in 11 states and the Federal Capital Territory. In Edo State, he received 331,163 votes, beating both APC and PDP candidates.
Okpara said, “Nigerians are suffering. Instead of focusing on real issues, some politicians are busy attacking those who speak up for the people.”
He added that the group has launched a campaign to deliver at least five million votes for Obi in the 2027 election, no matter which party he chooses to run with.
“We were shocked by the governor’s alleged statement that Obi must get permission before visiting Edo State. That kind of talk has only made us more determined,” Okpara said.
He also advised Governor Okpebholo to focus on his duties and stop making comments that could damage his image.
