The Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, has announced that a total lockdown will take place on May 30, 2025, across Biafra land.
The move is aimed at remembering and honouring men and women who died during the civil war and those who fought for the survival of the former Biafran Republic.
The group explained that this day is set aside every year for Biafrans to reflect on their history and remember those who lost their lives in the fight for independence.
It said the lockdown, which will run from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., is meant to give people time to stay indoors and honour the memories of the fallen.
IPOB revealed that it has reached out to governors in the South East and South South to inform them about the lockdown.
According to the group, the public should prepare for a full day at home, with no markets, schools, church services, meetings, or public events allowed during this period.
They want Biafrans to stay indoors, spend time with their families, and reflect on the painful events of the past.
The group noted that activities lined up for the day include memorial lectures and indoor remembrance events.
These are expected to take place both in Nigeria and abroad, as Biafrans in other countries have been urged to hold peaceful events such as town hall meetings and public gatherings—provided they have permission from local authorities.
IPOB also said it has informed the West African Examinations Council, WAEC, about the lockdown.
They requested that the council adjust its exam timetable so students sitting for the May/June SSCE will not be affected.
While Biafrans abroad are encouraged to carry out peaceful marches in support of the day, IPOB made it clear that no protests will be held within Nigeria.
The group warned that gathering in public spaces in Nigeria may lead to violence due to actions by security forces.
They stressed that their focus is to protect lives while still remembering their history.
The group called on all Biafrans to honour the day by staying home and remembering the victims of the 1967-1970 war and other injustices they say have been ongoing since then.
They also used the opportunity to honour late Biafran leaders and fighters who, according to them, gave everything to fight for the people’s freedom.
Only essential workers such as doctors, nurses, emergency service providers, and journalists will be allowed to move around during the lockdown.
