The Federal High Court in Abuja has convicted the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, on terrorism charges after nearly a decade of legal battle.
Justice James Omotosho delivered the verdict on Thursday, declaring that evidence presented before the court proved Kanu committed acts of terrorism.
“It is clear from the evidence that the defendant committed a terrorism act. The defendant is convicted in respect of count one,” the judge ruled.
Justice Omotosho judgement is still currently being delivered as at the time of this report with Kanu’s fate yet to be reveald as regards the remaining charges, including those relating to the declaration of sit-at-home orders in the South-East.
Earlier Kanu had insulted the judge and the prosecution team after he questioned not being allowed time to deliver his written address verbally.
The separatist leader had been escorted out of the court while stating that the outcome of the judgement would be rubbish, regardless of what it was.
Recall Dockaysworld reported that Kanu sacked his lawyers and opted to continue the rest of his defence himself.
Kanu had insisted that no judgment should be delivered until he was shown the specific law he allegedly breached, arguing that the court lacked jurisdiction.
Kanu’s legal troubles date back to his first arrest in 2015 on treason charges, followed by his controversial rearrest in Kenya in 2021.
His conviction comes months after Simon Ekpa, leader of the Biafra Republic Government in Exile, received a six-year jail term in Finland for inciting violence in Nigeria.
