JAMB confirms errors in 2025 UTME

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has taken full responsibility for errors that affected the outcome of the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), leading to mass failure among candidates.

This was made known during a press briefing in Abuja on Wednesday, where the Registrar of the Board, Professor Ishaq Oloyede, spoke on the matter.

He said that about 173,387 students will have to sit for the exam again following a series of technical issues that disrupted the earlier tests.

Oloyede who became emotional, struggled to hold back tears while accepting full blame for the failures and challenges many students faced during the exam.

The Board revealed that the problems mostly occurred in 65 centres across Lagos and 92 centres in the South East, especially within the Owerri zone.

The UTME, which had over 1.9 million registered candidates, recorded unusually low scores this year.

Reports indicate that more than 1.5 million of them scored below 200 out of the possible 400 marks, a situation that raised concerns from students, parents, and educators.

Many affected candidates also considered taking legal action against the Board before the new development.

JAMB acknowledged that it was aware of the technical failures and poor supervision in some centres during the exam.

These problems caused some candidates to experience incomplete sessions, lost data, and other disruptions that affected their scores.

The Registrar assured the public that the Board is working to prevent a repeat of such issues in the future.

He stated that necessary steps are already being taken to improve the examination process and ensure fairness to all candidates.

Meanwhile, preparations for the retake are expected to begin shortly, as the affected students await further information on the new exam dates and venue.
