Jonathan speaks on withdrawing from 2027 presidential race

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has debunked reports that he has withdrawn from the 2027 presidential race.

The clarification came after a publication alleged that Jonathan had stepped aside to avoid disrupting political unity in the South.

The report, which circulated on Friday, was discredited by Jonathan’s cousin, Azibaola Robert, who described it as false.

He stated that the former president has not said at any time that he would not take part in the election.

Although Jonathan has not officially declared his interest, there are strong signs that he has been holding consultations across the country.

His camp maintained that no aide has been authorised to speak on his behalf regarding the election, dismissing the supposed sources of the earlier report as fabricated.

Robert explained that Jonathan has not ruled himself out of the race and that those discouraging him from contesting are doing so for their own interests.

He said that the former president will make his decision known at the appropriate time.
