Kano governor renames ministry

The Kano State Government has approved a change in the name of the Ministry of Women Affairs, Children and Disabled to the Ministry of Women Affairs, Children and People with Special Needs.

The decision was reached during a State Executive Council meeting held at the Government House in Kano and was approved by Governor Abba Yusuf.

According to the Commissioner of the Ministry, Amb. Hajiya Amina Sani Abdullahi, the adjustment followed a formal request to replace the word “Disabled” with “People with Special Needs.”

She explained that the old term was no longer suitable as it carried negative perceptions, while the new one promotes dignity and reflects the value of every individual in society.

The Commissioner also noted that the renaming is part of efforts to strengthen inclusion and create a better environment for those with special needs.

She pointed out that the state government has remained committed to improving their welfare and ensuring they are not left behind in development plans.

She added that the step is not only a change of title but also a foundation for reforms that will drive empowerment and equal opportunities for people with special needs in Kano.
