The Kano State Government has suspended three doctors over allegations that surgical scissors were left in a patient’s stomach during an operation at a government hospital.
The incident occurred at the Abubakar Imam Urology Centre in Kano and was later linked to the death of Aishatu Umar, a mother of five.
The Kano State Hospitals Management Board confirmed that preliminary investigations found evidence of medical negligence in the case.
Recall that doctors allegedly left surgical scissors in Aishatu’s stomach during a surgical procedure at the facility.
Her husband, Abubakar Muhammad, said she developed severe complications after the operation and eventually died despite repeatedly raising concerns with hospital authorities.
In a statement issued by the Board’s Public Relations Officer, Samira Suleiman, the Board said the investigation was ordered by its Executive Secretary, Dr. Mansur Mudi Nagoda, and confirmed that the surgical instrument was left inside the patient’s body.
The case has been referred to the Kano State Medical Ethics Committee for further investigation and possible disciplinary action in line with professional standards and the law.
“The Board extends its deepest condolences to the family of the late Aishatu Umar and sympathizes with them over this painful loss. We reassure the public that negligence will not be condoned in any form,” the statement said.
The incident has triggered widespread outrage, with residents and social media users calling for justice and urgent reforms in public healthcare facilities.
