Leader of the Indigenous People Of Biafra (IPOB) Nnamdi Kanu, is preparing to take his case to the Court of Appeal after he was given a life sentence by Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja.
The judgment was delivered on Thursday, and it marked a major turn in his long-running trial.
Dockaysworld reports that Kanu was found guilty on all seven terrorism charges, which led to a life sentence on counts one, two, four, five and six, a 20-year term on count three with no option of fine, and five years on count seven, also without an option of fine.
All the jail terms are to run at the same time.
His lawyer Aloy Ejimakor, told reporters after the sentencing that the legal team will move straight to the Court of Appeal to seek a fresh review of the case.
He maintained that the ruling delivered in Abuja was unfair and insisted that a higher court would set it aside.
Ejimakor added that the legal team is ready to push the matter as far as the Supreme Court if the appeal court does not rule in their favour.
The court also ruled that Kanu should not be sent to Kuje Correctional Centre.
The judge said the facility was not suitable for him and ordered that he be kept in a more secure location.
Meanwhile, the family of Nnamdi Kanu has given fresh details about his reaction after he was sentenced to life imprisonment for terrorism-related offences.
In the message shared online, his brother Prince Emmanuel Kanu said he met with him shortly after the court decision.
The visit took place on November 21.
During their discussion, Kanu reportedly questioned how the court arrived at the judgement, raising concerns over the law used to convict him.
He also wondered why earlier rulings that cleared him were not taken into account.
Prince Emmanuel added that Kanu spoke about what he described as errors in the evidence presented against him and insisted that the judgement did not surprise him.
According to the family, he said the entire process was arranged long before the verdict was announced.
He wrote on Facebook: “Following my meeting with Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, I asked for his thoughts on the judgement of James K. Omotosho.
“His response was laughter, accompanied by a question regarding the plausibility of James K. Omotosho’s authority to convict him under a repealed law, thereby invalidating all actions.
“He highlighted the evident bias and frustration in the fabrication of non-existent evidence.
He also inquired about the status of prior judgements that had exonerated him. At that point, I agreed with him. In conclusion, he says the judgement is a predetermined script.”
