Kidnapped Anambra Neurosurgeon regains freedom after 6 days in captivity

A neurosurgeon with the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH), Nnewi, Dr. Tochukwu Mbanugo, who was abducted in Anambra State last week, has regained his freedom after six days in captivity.

This was disclosed by the NMA Chairman in the state, Dr. Princeton Okam, on Tuesday night.

He stated that the release comes even as the association was set to commence a statewide strike. He revealed that the kidnappers had been seeking 100 million naira in ransom.

“We just concluded our meeting, and if he had not been released, all doctors in the state would have downed tools. Luckily, we received a call from those in contact with the kidnappers confirming his freedom. I’ve also spoken to him, and I can confirm he’s stable,” Okam said.

Recall that Dr. Mbanugo was seized by gunmen in front of his hospital at Uruagu, Nnewi, on the evening of Thursday, October 30, 2025, and was released on Tuesday, November 4, 2025.

His release came shortly before the expiration of a 72-hour ultimatum issued by the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) in Anambra State to the government.

The NMA had earlier warned that it would suspend all medical services if authorities failed to secure Dr. Mbanugo’s release within 72 hours.

He lamented the growing trend of abductions targeting medical workers, stressing that doctors, who provide essential services despite poor remuneration, should not be subjected to such dangers.

“It’s troubling that doctors, who offer essential services, are being targeted by kidnappers. We are not well-paid to be victims of ransom demands. Many doctors are already leaving the country because of poor working conditions, and those of us who remain should be spared by these criminals,” he said.

The NMA chairman urged the government and security agencies to strengthen protection for healthcare workers, who are often called out at odd hours to save lives.
