Kwankwaso’s son resigns as Kano commissioner

Mustapha Rabiu Kwankwaso, son of former Kano State Governor and NNPP national leader, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has resigned as Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development in Kano State.

The resignation was announced on Monday in a statement, marking his exit from the Kano State Executive Council under Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf. No official reason was stated for his decision.

The development comes amid recent political realignments in Kano State following Governor Yusuf’s resignation from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), a party widely associated with and led de facto by Senator Kwankwaso.

Recall Dockaysworld reported that governor Yusuf dumped NNPP, citing prolonged internal crises and unresolved leadership disputes within the party.

As at the time of this report, the governor is in the process of joining the ruling All Progressive Congress, APC.

Governor Yusuf’s exit from the NNPP has been widely interpreted as a political fallout with his long-time mentor, Senator Kwankwaso.

The move has also been described by some political observers as a betrayal, given Kwankwaso’s influence in the party and his role in Yusuf’s political rise.

Amid the unfolding developments, political analysts say Senator Kwankwaso is currently engaged in consultations with various political blocs, including the ruling party and opposition groups, as he weighs his options ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In his resignation message, Mustapha Kwankwaso expressed gratitude to the governor for the opportunity to serve and wished the state continued progress, particularly in youth empowerment and sports development.

The statement reads in part:

“It is with a heavy heart that I announce my resignation as Honorable Commissioner, Ministry of Youth and Sports Development and Member of the Kano State Executive Council.

“I want to express my deepest gratitude to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for the opportunity to serve the great people of Kano State. I have cherished the experiences and lessons gained while serving, and I appreciate the trust placed in me.

“As I resign, I pray that the youth of Kano State will continue to receive the attention and support they deserve. I hope for the best for our sports development programs and initiatives, and I am confident that they will flourish in the years to come.

“May Allah (SWT) continue to shower His blessings on our beloved Kano State. I wish the government and people of Kano State all the best.”
