The Labour Party has clarified that its 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, is not acting alone in recent coalition discussions with other political groups aimed at challenging the ruling APC government in the 2027 elections.
In a statement released by Ken Asogwa, media adviser to the party’s National Caretaker Committee led by Senator Nenadi Usman, the party affirmed that it fully endorses Obi’s participation in the coalition movement.
This clarification comes in response to media reports suggesting that some former party members, including suspended chairman Julius Abure, disapproved of Obi’s involvement.
The caretaker committee dismissed these claims, saying Abure and his allies were no longer recognised as party leaders due to their previous anti-party actions.
The committee stressed that Obi’s goals align with the Labour Party’s core values, fighting hunger, insecurity, and poor governance and that he has every right to take part in a collective effort to rescue Nigeria.
They described Abure’s actions, including organising what they called an illegal 2024 national convention, as laughable and in direct violation of a Supreme Court ruling.
The party urged Nigerians to ignore statements from Abure’s group and rely only on official communications from the caretaker leadership.
They also reaffirmed that if the coalition effort fails, Peter Obi still has the full backing of the party to run for president in 2027 under the Labour Party banner.
