The Plateau State House of Assembly has elected Hon. Nanloong Daniel as its new speaker after the resignation of Hon. Gabriel Dewan.
The election was held during an emergency sitting at the temporary Assembly Complex, located at the Old Government House in Jos.
Daniel, who represents the Mikang constituency and previously served as majority leader in the 9th Assembly, was unanimously chosen by the 24-member legislature.
His emergence as speaker followed a closed-door meeting involving Governor Caleb Mutfwang, the former speaker, and other lawmakers.
The meeting was aimed at resolving ongoing political tension and leadership issues that have affected the Assembly, especially after the removal of PDP lawmakers.
Deputy Speaker Hon. Gwotta Ajang presided over the emergency session, which led to the smooth transition.
Gabriel Dewan, the only member of the Young Progressives Party (YPP) in the Assembly, and a representative of Plateau Central, resigned to help stabilise the political climate in the state.
