Italian fashion icon Giorgio Armani, renowned for redefining modern elegance in clothing and building a global luxury empire, has died at the age of 91.
Armani, who launched his label in 1975 with partner Sergio Galeotti, transformed men’s and women’s suits, pioneered red carpet fashion, and dressed Hollywood stars including Zendaya, Cate Blanchett, and Julia Roberts.
He also designed costumes for films such as American Gigolo and The Wolf of Wall Street.His company, now worth over £2bn annually, expanded into fragrances, beauty, sports, and luxury hotels.
Armani was also known for progressive industry moves, including banning underweight models from his shows in 2006 after the death of model Ana Carolina Reston.
In a statement, his brand said Armani “worked until his final days” and remained “indefatigable to the end.” Tributes have poured in, with Vogue’s Laura Ingham calling him a “true gentleman” and “titan of the industry.”
Born in 1934, Armani studied medicine before moving into fashion. Throughout his career, he received numerous honors, including the French Legion of Honour and Italy’s Order of Merit for Labour.
