The Chairman of Chanchaga Local Government Area in Niger State, Aminu Yakubu Ladan, has been suspended by the legislative council.
He was suspended shortly after he filed a lawsuit against the state government and the Niger State Independent Electoral Commission.
Ladan had gone to court to stop the planned local government elections scheduled for November 2025, arguing that his tenure should last four years and not three.
Just days after he made this move public, eight out of the ten councillors in the legislative council served him a suspension notice dated July 28, 2025.
The letter listed nine allegations against him and cited several sections of the Niger State Local Government Law as the legal basis for their action.
According to the letter, Ladan was accused of misusing council funds, illegally allocating plots in the market, and awarding contracts without proper legislative oversight.
He was also accused of failing to organize required finance and planning meetings, refusing to submit financial reports, and ignoring multiple invitations from the council.
Other accusations included the refusal of key directors under his administration to appear before the council, failure to present reports on Minna development funds, and generally running the council without respect for due process.
The councillors who signed the suspension notice said Ladan must submit a written response to the allegations within five working days.
If he fails to do so, he will lose the opportunity to defend himself.
