LG chairman suspended
The Chairman of Owo Local Government Area in Ondo State, Tope Omolayo, has been suspended following allegations of misconduct and abuse of office.
The suspension was announced by the Owo legislative council under the leadership of House Leader Doyin Adebayo.
Two-thirds of the council’s 11 members reportedly approved the decision, pointing to issues such as financial mismanagement, violation of budget rules, ignoring internally generated revenue guidelines, and showing disrespect to traditional rulers.
The council said the suspension aims to ensure accountability and proper management of local government affairs.
Following the move, Vice-Chairman Hamed Ibrahim was directed to serve as acting chairman until investigations are completed.
The lawmakers also instructed that all government properties in Omolayo’s possession be returned and that council bank signatories be updated to reflect the interim leadership.
Residents were asked to stay calm during the inquiry.
Omolayo, however, rejected the suspension, calling it politically motivated.
He said he had not received any official communication and insisted that he is still the legitimate chairman of Owo LGA.
He also claimed some councillors demanded money from him, which he refused, suggesting this was the reason for the action against him.
The chairman maintained that his record shows dedication to transparency and service and described the suspension as online propaganda aimed at discrediting him.
