Van Dijk was deemed to have fouled David de Gea in the build-up to Roberto Firmino’s goal before Gini Wijnaldum was denied by the linesman’s flag.
Liverpool dominated the second period but couldn’t find a second with De Gea keeping the visitors in it before Salah raced clear in added time.
The win takes Liverpool 16 points clear of champions Manchester City in the race for the title.
