Liverpool 3-1 Man City: Another twist in the title race as the reds defeat the champions

Liverpool moved eight points clear at the top of the Premier League with a stunning but somewhat controversial 3-1 victory over title rivals Manchester City.

City where adamant they should have been awarded a penalty with less than five minutes played when Reds defender Trent

Alexander-Arnold appeared to handle the ball in the box under pressure from Sergio Aguero.

But Michael Oliver waved away their protests and the Reds immediately went up the other end and took the lead through Fabinho’s stunner in the sixth minute, with VAR bizarrely agreeing with the referee’s decision.

With Anfield bouncing, Jurgen Klopp’s title-chasers doubled their lead seven minutes later when Mohamed Salah headed home after wonderful play from Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson.

Once again, VAR was forced to intervene and for the second time, Liverpool were given the benefit of the doubt as replays
were unclear over whether or not Salah was offside in the build-up to his goal.

Six minutes after the restart and Liverpool made it three when Jordan Henderson whipped in a teasing cross to Sadio Mane, who headed home at the back post despite Claudio Bravo’s best efforts to deny the Senegal star.

Bernardo Silva pulled one back for City with with a well-taken strike in the box but the Reds ultimately cruised to a comfortable win that moved them a whopping nine points clear of Pep Guardiola’s reigning champions.
