Madagascar’s President Andry Rajoelina has dissolved his entire cabinet after violent protests erupted over power outages and water shortages across the country.
The move came as young people took to the streets, demanding immediate action to address the daily hardships caused by unreliable electricity and water supply.
The president announced the dismissal of Prime Minister Christian Ntsay and other ministers in a televised address on Monday.
He said public frustration and the suffering of citizens is the reason for the decision.
The protests turned deadly as security forces clashed with demonstrators, resulting in at least 20 deaths and numerous injuries.
The unrest has drawn international concern, with the United Nations raising alarm over the use of force against peaceful protestors and calling on authorities to protect citizens’ rights to free expression and assembly.
Residents of Madagascar have faced recurring challenges with basic utilities, fueling widespread anger and calls for immediate government action.
The president is yet to announce the formation of a new cabinet.
