Military set to arraign soldiers over coup plot against Tinubu

The Nigerian military has concluded investigations into an alleged coup plot against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and is preparing to arraign officers found to have a case to answer.

The development follows months of speculation after reports emerged in October last year that several officers, ranging from the rank of Captain to Brigadier-General, were arrested and detained by the Defence Intelligence Agency over an alleged attempt to overthrow the government.

On Monday, the military high command confirmed that the investigative panel established to probe the matter has completed its assignment and submitted its report to the appropriate superior authority.

In the statement seen by Dockaysworld, the military said the investigation identified some officers whose actions were inconsistent with the ethics, values, and professional standards expected of members of the Armed Forces of Nigeria.

It added that those implicated would be brought before appropriate military judicial panels in line with the Armed Forces Act and other relevant service regulations.

According to the military, making the outcome of the probe public is part of efforts to ensure accountability while upholding fairness and due process, stressing its continued loyalty to constitutional authority and democratic governance.

The statement reads in part:

“The Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) wishes to inform the general public that investigations into the matter have been concluded and the report forwarded to appropriate superior authority in line with extant regulations.

“The comprehensive investigation process, conducted in accordance with established military procedures, has carefully examined all circumstances surrounding the conduct of the affected personnel.

“The findings have identified a number of the officers with allegations of plotting to overthrow the government which is inconsistent with the ethics, values and professional standards required of members of the AFN.

“Accordingly, those with cases to answer will be formally arraigned before appropriate military judicial panel to face trial in accordance with the Armed Forces Act and other applicable service regulations.

“The AFN reiterates that measures being taken are purely disciplinary and part of ongoing institutional mechanisms to preserve order, discipline and operational effectiveness within the ranks.”
