The National Assembly has confirmed that it will transmit the report of the ongoing review of the 1999 Constitution to all 36 state assemblies before December 2025.
This update was given during a public hearing in Lagos, where the Senate Leader and Chairman of the Constitution Review Committee, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, urged all stakeholders to engage and lobby their state assemblies to ensure the success of the constitutional amendment process.
He made it clear that the National Assembly cannot finalise the review without the approval of at least two-thirds of the state legislatures.
Bamidele stated that the constitution review process is a serious national assignment aimed at achieving reforms that will improve governance and development across the country.
Key issues discussed in the review include the devolution of powers, local government autonomy, the creation of new states, and the establishment of state police.
Also present at the hearing were several senators and stakeholders from the South-West zone, who submitted their proposals and concerns.
The Speaker of the Oyo State Assembly and Chairman of the Conference of Speakers, Rt. Hon. Debo Ogundoyin, represented by his deputy, called for greater legislative powers for state governments in areas such as solid minerals, labour, telecommunications, and stamp duties.
He also supported the creation of state police, arguing it would enhance security and promote local development.
The National Assembly assured that all suggestions received during the hearings would be compiled, processed, and sent to the state legislatures for consideration before the end of the year.
