Lieutenant A.M. Yerima of the Nigerian Navy escaped an assassination attempt on Sunday evening in Abuja, Dockaysworld.
According to military sources, the incident began when two unmarked Hilux vans trailed him from the NIPCO Filling Station along the Line Expressway to Gado Nasco Way.
The incident occurred around 6:30 p.m. and involved unknown men dressed in black who followed him in vehicles without number plates.
Military contacts told Vanguard that the officer noticed the surveillance and used a sharp maneuver to break away from the suspected attackers.
The matter is now under investigation, and officials are withholding further details to avoid affecting ongoing inquiries.
The attempted attack comes shortly after Yarima’s confrontation with FCT Minister Nyesom Wike at a disputed land site in Gaduwa District.
The clash, captured on video, spread across social media and drew strong reactions.
Veterans across the country condemned Wike’s treatment of the officer and rejected calls for disciplinary action.
They warned that former service members were prepared to storm the minister’s office if any punishment was issued.
They also reminded leaders that military personnel serve the nation, not individual political figures.
Defence Minister Mohammad Badaru Abubakar later assured that no officer performing lawful duty would be penalised, adding that the government will protect all service members acting within the law.
Veterans had earlier vowed to gather at the FCT Ministry if Yarima faced any disciplinary move.
