Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has claimed that “voodoo” played a role in Nigeria’s penalty shoot-out defeat to DR Congo during Sunday’s World Cup playoff final.
He alleged that a member of the Congolese technical team performed the act during the decisive kicks.
Chelle made the accusation during a post-match interview while responding to questions about the heated exchange that nearly escalated into a fight between both benches.
He said the confrontation began after he witnessed what he described as ‘voodoo’ being used beside the penalty area.
Dockaysworld reported that Nigeria were eliminated from the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers after falling 4–3 on penalties to DR Congo following a 1-1 draw after extra time.
Recall that the Super Eagles had reached the playoff final after a difficult qualification path, including a semi-final win over Gabon.
According to Chelle, the other team had been using some sort of liquid, he couldn’t tell was water or otherwise, to make gestures during the shootout.
He’d reacted violently and had to be held back from assaulting members of the other team.
Many Nigerians including celebrities have called out the performance of the players, stating that they had disappointing showing as they missed out on the World Cup for the second time running.
